March 2026
Are you ready for spring ? It’s only 20 days away. Can’t wait to see something green again!
I'm thinking about starting my seeds indoors in a few weeks. Those of you who do should have your supplies by now. Here’s a few reminders for you.
Use a good seed starting soil. I use PROMIX. It’s available at reliable garden centers. Dodges Agway in Hampton Falls N.H. has it. It comes in bags and bails. Share with a friend if it’s too big much for you. It’s great for your containers too.
Don’t start seed too early. Seedlings will get leggy if started too soon. Follow the seed packet instructions for proper time. If you use containers from previous years, be sure to sterilize them and any tools that you use. It’s also a good idea to sterilize all your other garden tools. 1/3 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Remember to wash your work surface and hands before you start your seeds.
Even though spring officially starts March 20th, I think it will be a little late this year. The snow has to melt, and the ground has to firm up before you can start your spring cleanup. (I can’t wait to get started. But we must be patient.) Start with a small project. If you take too much, too soon, you can lose your enthusiasm and stamina, and you may not reach your goal. Better to complete one small spot before you start another. That will give you encouragement to keep going. A lot of gardening chores are just good common sense. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Gardening is a constantly evolving science. New ideas and methods are part of the learning process. You can never know it all. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
So, with that said, a garden journal is a great idea now. Start by writing what you would like to accomplish this year. It will be fun to check it later to see if you have achieved your expectations.
The orchid show is still on at Tower Hill Botanic Gardens in Bolyston. It’s only an hour away. It’s a fantastic show, well worth the trip. It will give you a great lift….They have a great cafe’ and gift shop too. Happy spring, <3 Carole
