February 2026
The good news is that seeds are now available at most retail stores. Though it’s still too early to start most seeds, it’s a good time to get them while the selection is abundant. I found discounted Burbee seeds at Job Lots in Seabrook, N.H. along with other seed starting merchandise.
I hope you all are enjoying the weather we’ve had in the last few days. It’s the first major snowstorm we’ve had in years. Actually, it’s very beneficial for gardeners. Snow is often called “a poor man’s fertilizer.” Why? As snow falls, the snow crystals collect nutrients in the atmosphere. Those nutrients will go into the soil as the snow slowly melts. Waking from their winter dormancy in the spring, our plants will take up those nutrients gradually. Thus, being fertilized by “Mother Nature”.
Another benefit of deep fluffy snow is it offers great insulation for perennials, trees and shrubs. In what way? It keeps the soil temperature stable. Like a blanket, neutralizing the temperature changes, we often experience this time of year. Relax. Enjoy the beauty of the snow! You will see the results when we have a gorgeous spring!
