Bird Nest Botany, Judith Sumner
Partnering with the Refuge, Judith Sumner, PhD, was selected for our Special Speaker Program to share with the community. Birds’ nests are the architectural wonders of the animal kingdom, constructed mostly of plant materials. Take a fascinating look at nest form and function, with particular attention paid to plant structures and their adaptive re-use in nest construction.

Tree Peonies, Anthony Francis
Anthony Francis, tree peony specialist, discovered them on a walk through the Rockport neighborhood where he had recently moved in 1988. His passion for tree peonies is as inspirational as his story of arriving in the U.S. He refers to them as the aristocrats of the garden: “They develop a dignified, complex, and architectural form. The flowers are really just a bonus. But what a bonus!” Learn which ones are the best to grow and how to avoid planting mistakes.

Please plan to attend our 6th annual fundraising event in collaboration with the Friends of the Library. The library will be filled with an array of floral displays interpretive of the creator’s chosen book. Live floral demonstrations, music, auctions, raffles, and refreshments will make for a memorable evening. Tickets are $25.

Edible Landscape Design, Barbara Emerson
After 30 years in sales and marketing and with 16 years at Horticulture Magazine, Barbara Emerson is semi-retired and living in Maine. An enthusiastic Principal Master Gardener, she will share with us her wealth of gardening inspiration. Together we will learn about interplanting – mixing plants, herbs and vegetables creatively and with dinner in mind! Her gardening advice has been quoted as “practical, fun, liberating and realistic”.

Introduction to Mushroom Culture, Willie Crosby
In this presentation, Willie Crosby, of Fungi Ally, will speak about mushroom life cycles, their ecological roles, and how to grow them in the garden. Mushrooms are a nutritious food source that can be grown year round. Watch and learn as Willie inoculates logs to be raffled off to those in attendance!

We will be visiting a few of our own member’s gardens. At our last stop we will enjoy refreshments which attending members will provide and a plant swap.

Field Trip: Hosta Amour, Pelham, New Hampshire
Take a leisurely stroll through Cheryl and Rich Cravino’s two acres of display gardens and over 800 varieties of hosta and companion plants. These award-winning gardeners have 350 varieties for sale. Don’t miss this shabby chic garden experience.

Field Trip: East Meets West at the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain, MA
This informative 90 minute guided walking tour will be led by an Arboretum docent. Since the late 19th century, the Arnold Arboretum has endeavored to acquire familiar native plants and their Asian cousins. Hear stories of how these plants come together and enjoy the surroundings of this historic park

Lisa Greene, AAF, AIFD, PFCI, of Beach Plum Flowers, will showcase her creativity and knowledge while demonstrating the basics of designing, creating and caring for your winter creation. Just in time for the holiday season, her beautiful wreaths will be raffled off to attendees.

Make a fragrant and festive decoration for your home! Judy Avery, a very-talented member, will show us the technique and then you and your table mates will get busy creating! Please bring a small decorative container, clippers, and any decorations you wish to add. A food item to share in celebration of the holidays is also requested. In the spirit of giving, we will be donating a few extra to local nursing homes.
