On the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, there is a very special organic farm where they raise Vanilla Beans, Cinnamon, Peppercorns, Cacao for chocolate and more. See photos of growing and drying, as well as lots of tastings of cinnamon, and different types of chocolate. Many of these vanilla beans are shipped to Somerville. Please join Nancy Engel, an expert in the study of aromatic and culinary plants, to learn more about this timely topic.

Come learn the three secrets to create breathtaking garden photographs with your camera or smartphone. Have fun while you take your photographs from like to LOVE. Discover how to capture the beauty of your garden. Suzanne Merritt is an author, artist and founder of the Curious Soul Photo School in Boston. She is also a master level photography instructor with a studio at the Boston Center for the Arts and has led garden photography workshops in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Books in Bloom

Gather friends and family to help support our annual fundraising event in collaboration with the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library. Together with local businesses, our members, their members, and many talented designers, this springtime celebration is always a popular evening out. It promises to be filled with imaginative arrangements, interesting book choices, raffles, silent auction items, music, delicious appetizers and thirst quenchers – tickets are $25.

Tree Talk, Friends of Newburyport Trees

Our own member, Jean Berger, is Secretary of this charitable organization. She will bring special guests to discuss their mission, past and future projects, how to be involved and their relationship with the Newburyport Tree Commission. Correct planting, mulching and pruning of new trees and examples of not so commonly used trees will be shared.

Victory Gardens, Melissa Pace

Let’s learn together on our 75th anniversary year with a program presented this month by Melissa Pace. She talks about the beginnings of Victory Gardens during WWI and WWII and their applications in today’s world. Gardens have assisted the US through war, economic downturns and other difficulties. She addresses home garden initiatives from the 1900’s to the re-ignited White House  Garden of 2009. You will receive your own “Personal Victory Garden” worksheet. Melissa is an award-winning horticulturist, garden educator, artist and photographer.

​Field Trip to Maudslay State Park, Newburyport​
This local jewel consisting of 480 acres was purchased by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1985 to save as greenspace. Donna Sudak, a wonderful 20-year veteran interpreter, knows the park intimately and will be our guide. A part of our tour will no doubt be the Park’s highlight of the year - “the bloom” of mature and colorful Rhododendrons. There is also an amazing history to hear while walking the Estate including the 19th century Formal Gardens consisting of the Italian and Rose Gardens. Bring your walking shoes for this 1.5 hour tour that is not to be missed.  MEMBERS ONLY

Glen Magna Farms survives unrivaled as an estate exemplifying historic North Shore summer living. It typifies the golden age of American Gardens when eclecticism and historicism dominated landscape as well as architecture. The award-winning landscape includes formal gardens massed with colorful perennials, annuals and shrubbery. After arriving by carpool, we will enjoy a tour of the amazing gardens and also tour the mansion guided by their grounds and restoration manager followed by a boxed lunch. 75th Anniversary Soiree
The Newburyport Horticultural Society will be hosting a members-only gala cocktail party to celebrate the group’s 75th Anniversary. This promises to be a fun-filled evening to reminisce, share stories and toast to our wonderful endeavors as a group. This 75th gala event will replace our Annual Harvest Dinner this month.

Recycling/Composting for Today, Molly Ettenborough

Molly Ettenborough, Newburyport Recycling and Energy Manager, and Christin Walth, local Zero Waste expert, will talk about all of the local and regional options gardeners have for recycling, reusing, reducing, repairing and refusing as they relate to horticulture. Recycling and reusing makes so much sense and sharing this information so important.

Steve Flynn of Nunan Florist and Greenhouses will bring some beautiful nursery stock to see and hear about. He has been purchasing nursery stock for over 15 years, narrowing down the options to a few key nurseries that have exceeded his quality expectations. Ninety-five percent of Nunan’s annuals and perennials are grown right there. Let’s learn more tips about bringing nature indoors – just in time for the long winter months to arrive.
